Société tunisienne de l'électricité et du gaz (الشركة التونسية للكهرباء و الغاز) or STEG is a Tunisian non-administrative public company. Created in 1962, its mission is to produce and distribute electricity and natural gas throughout Tunisia.
On the eve of independence, the electricity business was managed by seven concessionary companies responsible for supplying the country's main regions, with a total installed capacity of almost 100 MW and production of around 240 GWh.
In 1962, with the aim of harmonizing the electricity and gas sector, the Tunisian State, by law N°62-8 of April 3, 1962, created the Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG) and entrusted it with the production, transport and distribution of electricity and gas.
The Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG), created by law, has the following essential missions:
- Electrification of the country
- Development of the natural gas network
- Building an electricity and gas infrastructure
