A project led by Powerstove Offgrid Electricity Ltd

Peachwater is an energy conversion social enterprise based in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. It manufactures Powerstove, the first connected kitchen stove, with autonomous tracking through the cloud. These are smart cooking stoves fuelled by biomass pellets, wood chips, palm husks, charcoal and many types of forest or agricultural waste.

In Nigeria 45 % of the population do not have access to electricity. “Poor and low-income families are currently spending more than 25 % of their income on fuel for cooking and lighting” says Okey Esse, CEO and Project Leader at Powerstove.

Context

These innovative ovens do not emit smoke and burn 70% less biomass than traditional solutions. They also cook food faster and produce electricity. This energy, made available to households off-grid, can be used to charge small appliances (lamp, telephone, etc.). It can also be stored in a battery which has a USB plug that can be used when the stove is switched off. The built-in fan increases the oxygen level in the combustion chamber, and after one minute the temperature approaches 1000°C. The biomass is thus gasified and burned almost completely, reducing the production of toxic pollutants by 95%. The fuel savings mean that the Powerstove is self-financing in less than three months, making it possible to offer a "Pay as you Cook" financing system.

Objectives
  • Raising awareness of deforestation, indoor air pollution and inefficient cooking
  • Partner with companies with a high carbon footprint by investing in the distribution of their clean energy products to offset carbon pollution
  • Visualise how the stove is used throughout the day, how much CO2, biomass or black carbon is saved, or how much kW is generated

Activities

Offering carbon credits to polluting companies: Powerstove is partnering with GreenTec Capital Partners and Erasmus Tech Consulting to support the development of the carbon credit market.

Impacts

Today, over 4,000 households are connected, and the start-up hopes to extend its project to other villages on the African continent.
In July 2022, Powerstove launched a project consisting in the free distribution of 500,000 stoves in 7 States in Nigeria.
