Optimizing the performance, durability and impact of batteries for mini-grids

How can we better manage the end-of-life of batteries to reduce environmental impact and strengthen the circular economy? Suivre

The end-of-life management of batteries is a critical issue in the region: increasing waste streams, still-developing local recycling sectors, variable regulations, and a dominant role for the informal sector. The study highlights three essential pathways: reuse, refurbishment, and recycling—with promising initiatives (SLS Energy, Lagazel, Vittoria Battery Bank Africa). However, challenges remain: traceability, safety, standards, high costs of hydrometallurgical recycling, lack of infrastructure, and quality variations depending on the technology.

How do you currently manage the collection, reuse, or recycling of batteries? What solutions or partnerships would be needed to better valorize end-of-life batteries?

This topic opens a discussion on current practices, local needs, and avenues for innovation to reduce the environmental impact of storage.
