📘 Impact Study on the Ban of Creosote in Network Projects

Technical Report – AFD (2024)

Worldwide, wooden poles are widely used in electricity distribution networks. To protect them from natural threats such as insects and humidity, they are treated with chemical products—among which creosote, a coal-derived substance, is the most common.

However, creosote is known to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic, and it is also highly toxic to aquatic organisms. As a result, the European Commission has decided to ban its use.

This technical report, conducted by AFD, provides an in-depth analysis of the impact this ban may have on electrification and energy access projects, particularly in Africa. It examines available alternatives, the sectors affected, and the financial implications of switching to more sustainable treatments. It is an essential resource for energy stakeholders and decision-makers.
